All too often we have written posts about pedestrians or bicyclists being injured when they collide with a motor vehicle. This post is focused on an accident involving a skateboarder and a dump truck.

The accident occurred a little after noon one day last week. According to police, the skateboarder was injured as he rode his skateboard down a driveway, located on Tester Road in Monroe, Washington. He reportedly ended up in the road after he lost control and hit the front of the moving dump truck. The driveway was located just in front of Monroe High School.

After hitting the truck, the skateboarded, a teenager who attends the high school, was dragged by the dump truck. This continued until the dump truck stopped, about 40 feet from where the collision occurred.

Though the teenager was conscious after the accident his leg and hip were injured in the incident. He and his mother were transported to the Harborview Medical Center.

When it comes to motor vehicle accidents involving skateboarders, those riding skateboards are in the same position as pedestrians and cyclists. While some may be wearing some protective gear such as helmets, wrist guards, elbow and knee pads, this is not really meant to keep them safe should they collide with a car, bus or truck.

Because this gear is no match for thousand-pound pieces of fast-moving metal, the injuries inflicted can be devastating. In addition to broken bones, more devastating injuries such as those to the brain or spine can occur. In the worst cases, a skateboarder may die due to his or her injuries.
