Seattle crane operator injured in collapse

The operator of a crane at the Seattle shipyard, Vigor Industrial, was injured earlier this week. His injuries were due to the collapse of the crane he was operating. It, along with the man, ended up with the water.

This work accident comes on the heels of a fatal accident that occurred at the site earlier this month. In a previous post we wrote about the worker's death after a fall from scaffolding at the Harbor Island location, formerly home to Todd Pacific Shipyards.

New traffic cameras provide real-time information to motorists

Washington state officials hope that new traffic cameras on Interstate-5 can make driving on this busy strip of Washington highway a bit safer. The goal is to make it less likely that drivers will suffer a car accident as they travel the highway from Arlington to Tacoma, Washington.

The Web cameras allow motorists to view real-time pictures of traffic conditions on the highway. This might not seem overly important. However, if drivers see that traffic is backed up because of wintry conditions or an existing accident, it might cause them to either choose alternate driving routes or practice safe-driving techniques.

Washington skateboarder injured after collision with dump truck

All too often we have written posts about pedestrians or bicyclists being injured when they collide with a motor vehicle. This post is focused on an accident involving a skateboarder and a dump truck.

The accident occurred a little after noon one day last week. According to police, the skateboarder was injured as he rode his skateboard down a driveway, located on Tester Road in Monroe, Washington. He reportedly ended up in the road after he lost control and hit the front of the moving dump truck. The driveway was located just in front of Monroe High School.

Beer pong lawsuit against bar dismissed

Beer pong is a favorite past time for many young, eager drinkers throughout the country, including the state of Washington. Essentially, two to four players take turns tossing ping pong balls into each other's cups. Those who are lucky enough to get a ball in their cup must drink a beer as quickly as possible. The ultimately goal of the game: get players as drunk as possible.

However, after playing beer pong at a local bar and becoming "extremely intoxicated", one man was hit by a car when attempting to cross a busy highway-and blames the bar.

He later filed suit against the bar alleging that the bar failed to properly monitor his beer consumption after allowing him to partake in the drinking game at one of their designated beer pong tables located inside the bar and, as a result, was injured in a car accident.

Accident at Paine Field injures Boeing worker

A man who works for Boeing is lucky to be alive after his involvement in an accident last week. The man was injured on the job when he was run over by the wheels of a Boeing 787 while helping to move it at Paine Field located in Everett.

Prior to his shift, he reportedly told his grandparents he was going to be assisting in moving a plane. He also said he would be doing some work on the plane's landing lights.

According to the man's grandfather, the worker grabbed the chalk he was in the process of setting at the wheels when the plane began to overtake him. He reportedly used this to pull himself up, preventing his injuries from being any worse.

Woman seriously injured after hitting 2 garbage trucks

Car accidents happen each day throughout the Seattle area. While the majority of accidents are only fender benders resulting in property damage and minor, if any injuries, sometimes the injuries are more severe. An early morning accident last week left the driver of a car with life-threatening injuries.

The motor vehicle accident occurred in an industrial area in the 4800 block of Fourth Avenue South, where the when a woman driving a Mazda hit two garbage trucks in succession. As she drove south down Fourth Avenue, she hit the first garbage truck that was headed in the opposite direction. That first collision caused the woman to lose control of her car and hit the second garbage truck involved in the incident.

Seattle shipyard worker dies after fall

Seattle shipyards provide workers throughout the area with livable wages as the industry has done for the last century. Here, workers drive trucks, use welding machines and operate cranes while constructing or repairing vessels. As is the case with most industrial type jobs, there are many potential dangers and unexpected accidents can occur at any time.

Last week a worker at local shipyard, Vigor Shipyards, sustained serious injuries when he fell from scaffolding while working. Emergency workers, including the Seattle Fire Department, were called to the Elliot Bay shipyard, formerly known as Todd Pacific Shipyards, after the incident. Sadly, they were unable to help the man who had fallen between 70 and 100 feet. The trauma he sustained was too severe and the worker died at the scene.

Logging truck involved in accident on Highway 525

In the Pacific Northwest it is not uncommon to see logging trucks transporting freshly cut timber to a mill for processing. These trucks, like most trucks, are large which makes them easy for most to see. Despite this fact, there are still times that they are run into by other vehicles.

One such truck accident occurred early one morning last week at the intersection of Highway 525 and Scott Road. According to a Washington State Trooper, the logging truck had recently pulled onto the highway when the car, a Ford Taurus, hit it from behind. The collision caused the horn on the Ford to jam. This likely woke many of the residents in the area as the accident occurred shortly before 6:00 a.m.

Bus hits tree after driver is assaulted and loses control

On any given day, in Seattle and around the country, it is a given that many people will be running late. Sometimes this causes people to do things they otherwise might not, such as exceed the speed limit while driving. It isn't just those behind the wheel however that behave in ways they might not if they were on time. In some cases their actions may be drastic enough to cause an accident.

This was displayed in the actions of a man on a city bus last week who feared that he would be late for work.

Should you swerve to avoid that deer in the headlights?

Washington State Troopers, California Highway patrol officers and other traffic safety experts offer advice to help Seattle drivers avoid a car accident with an animal. Experts now advise drivers who suddenly come upon an animal in the road not to swerve to avoid hitting the animal. If the driver can safely make a lane change to avoid an animal-vehicle collision, that may be the best course of action for the animal. However, human injuries are most likely to occur by car crashes that happen after the driver swerves.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration collects statistics on human-animal collisions. In 2009, 12,000 injury crashes involving animals took place; 173 crashes included human fatalities. The cost of these accidents is significant.
